Ex-PSL striker's death confirmed

Former SuperSport United and Hellenic striker Desmond Chauke has died.

Chauke came through the ranks at SuperSport and made his debut during the 2000/01 season under Bruce Grobbelaar in a team featuring John Moeti, Thomas Madigage, David Notoane, Kaitano Tembo, and Patrick Mayo.

The pint-sized former marksman scored twice during his time at Matsatsantsa before moving to Hellenic in January 2002, where he was one of the scorers in the famous 3-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns.

At Hellenic, he was also mostly used from the bench and was with the club when they were bought and then relocated to Benoni.

After that, he was the First Division top scorer during the 2005/06 season playing for Mabopane Young Masters with 16 in the league, plus three in the cup competitions.

The following campaign, he stayed on when the club's name changed to FC AK and would then go on to play for Winners Park.

Nicknamed Bunene, Chauke was born on August 19, 1981.

A statement from SuperSport released this morning confirmed his death.

"Everyone at SuperSport United is saddened to learn of the passing of club legend, Desmond Chauke.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and football fraternity during this difficult time.

"May his soul rest in eternal peace," reads the statement.
