'I made an impossible pass possible'

In this edition of Story Behind The Nickname, KickOff speaks to former Black Leopards and Bloemfontein Celtic striker Roggert Nyundu.

The 36-year-old, who is now in the books of Mpumalanga Province's ABC Motsepe League side Phezulu FC, also played for the likes of Sivutsa Stars, Polokwane City, AmaZulu FC, Kruger United, and Venda Football Club, amongst others.

Who and where did you play?

"I'm currently in Secunda with Phezulu Football Club. I might have planned to play overseas, but because of my age, it can no longer happen.

"My football career had its ups and downs because I'd get a team for two years, and there would be some breaks in between. I wouldn't say I'm stressed about it, but I'm happy with the way I have handled things.

"The 2013/14 season when I was with Black Leopards, that's where I enjoyed football the most, and I enjoyed the company of my teammates."

What's your nickname?

"Madala Tsotsi."

Who gave it to you and why?

"As I've mentioned to you, there were ups and downs in my career, but that didn't make me stop playing. So, I would keep fit by playing for local amateur teams from home so that whenever an offer came, it would find me fit and ready.

"So one day, I was playing a local tournament called Meropa Tournament back at home in Hazyview, where I made an impossible pass possible. So the commentator on that pitch, in his loud voice, said, 'This guy is a tsotsi, at his age, how can he pass a ball like that to someone behind him while facing the other direction?'

"So that's how I got the name Madala Tsotsi, but there are people who thought I was given the name because I'm a tsotsi, when in fact that is not the case. I'm not a gangster."

Did you like it?

"Because of the tricks I usually do on the field of play, I never had a problem with the name. So wherever I'm going people call me Madala Tsotsi."

If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?

"People sometimes used to call me 'Mario Balotelli' because of the tactic, aggressiveness, and hunger that I have. That's when I started loving jersey number 45, the number worn by Mario Balotelli."
