Steve Lekoelea: Employ me as your set-piece coach

We have recently seen Pirates taking football development further by hiring finishing coaches, but Lekoelea is still unhappy with the lack of dead-ball specialists in the DStv Premiership and GladAfrica Championship.

While Serie A and Bundesliga stars like Cristiano Ronaldo are respected for their deadly free-kicks, our domestic game continues to disappoint when it comes to the skill.

Only a few players such as Mokgakolodi Ngele, Gerald Phiri Jnr, Rhulani Manzini and Collins Makgaka have been able to enjoy success from dead-ball situations in recent times.

Players such as Daine Klate and Katlego Mphela who could find the back of the net with one kick appear to be disappearing from South African football.

"Dead-ball specialists can win you football games, you can win a World Cup with dead-ball specialists," Lekoelea tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"Me, I had everything. Dribbling, pass, free-kick specialist, the only thing I was weak at was defending. I didn't want to waste my energy defending. The problem with current players is that they are too relaxed. For example this boy [Siphelele] Ntshangase, he's too relaxed and he's wearing a big number.

"I mastered this thing from a very young age, before I turned professional. Even today I still score from free-kicks. Remember, we play every Sunday in the over-35s matches. It's very important for each team to have a dead-ball specialist because it can help the team win a game," Lekoelea says.

"Do you remember when we played Ajax in the Rothmans Cup? Do you remember that free-kick I scored? Do you remember who was in goals for Ajax? Calvin Marlin. Ngamphinda futhi [I did it to him again] while playing for Maritzburg United in 2006. Same keeper, different teams. I was now with Maritzburg and he was at Sundowns.

"I think I should go to the PSL teams and take two or three of their players for a practice. I think I hit them better than all the current PSL players. I can go to their training sessions and assist maybe two players.

"Pirates supporters used to celebrate before I even took it because they knew this thing is made in me, it's married to me. During a free-kick it's you, the ball and the keeper. You have to make sure the ball is going inside. Every time Pirates got a free-kick their supporters would scream my name, even if I was at home not playing on that day."
