South African government considering opening football stadiums for vaccinated fans

After an initial slow rollout of the vaccinations in the country there has been a major increase in the daily jabs since the 18 and over age group were granted access to register.

But in a bid to increase the numbers to the 300,000 daily target for jabs set by president Cyril Ramapohosa, the government are mulling on incentivising with the lure of nightclubs and live football entertainment.

"People are hungry for entertainment, for music festivals, to go to Orlando stadium to go and watch a soccer match," Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla told Business Insider.

"So, what we are exploring is the possibility where, with some kind of confirmation that you have been vaccinated, we could start up opening up various activities, sports, cultural, and more businesses and other get-togethers.

"To say, if you are vaccinated, so many people can go to the soccer stadium to watch a match."

It's been nearly 18 months since the Covid-19 lockdown left supporters and media unable to attend Premier Soccer League fixtures.
