Roger De Sa feels Ajax Cape Town are nine points off a top eight finish

The Urban Warriors currently lie fifth in the PSL standings on 31 points, yet are just two points ahead of eighth-placed Polokwane City, who have a game in hand.

A 2-1 victory over SuperSport United over the weekend saw De Sa’s charges reach their first target of the season of 30 points, yet are now looking ahead to their next target.

“Thirty points was our first target,” De Sa told reporters. “We’ve now achieved that – maybe a couple of weeks later than I wanted, but nevertheless we’ve got there. And now we’ve got to focus on 40 – 40 I think is enough to get us into the top eight.

“And if we can get to those 40 points within the next three games, I’ll be delighted, and then we’ll have another target after that.”

The former Orlando Pirates coach insists his side will be focusing on reaching their season’s targets one game at a time.

“For us now, it’s a question of game by game, trying to win every game we play,” he said. “It’s like the Cricket World Cup we all watching now – you don’t think of getting 100 before getting 50, so let’s try get to 40 now, then worry about the rest after that.

“So now we’ve reached the first objective, we’ll keep going and try to reach the next one as quickly as possible.”

Ajax face a struggling Mpumalanga Black Aces in their next League fixture, yet De Sa feels his side need to remain focused on their own task and not worry about their opposition, who are winless in their last seven League encounters.

“There’s different type of pressure – one at the top, and one at the bottom, so any team has their own pressure, in what they are trying to achieve,” De Sa said. “So a team like Aces are looking over their shoulders a little bit; they are a bit concerned about the results around them.

“But we can’t worry too much about that, we’ve got to focus on getting as close to the top four as possible.”

Kick-off against AmaZayoni is scheduled for 19:30 at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday evening.
