On This Day: Orlando Pirates pip Ajax Cape Town to 2010/11 Absa Premiership title

21 May marks a special day for many Orlando Pirates fans who endured an eight-year wait before they finally saw their team hold the league trophy aloft in 2011.

On this day, nine years ago, Pirates clinched the Absa Premiership title in dramatic fashion after trailing log leaders Ajax Cape Town by two points before the final round of league fixtures of the season.

The Urban Warriors stumbled at the death as they drew 2-2 at home to Maritzburg United, while the Buccaneers marched to a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium – ultimately crushing the hopes of the Cape-based outfit.

Ruud Krol, in his famous peach shirt and blazer, did the unthinkable by leading his charges to a first championship crown in eight years, after also bagging the MTN8 title earlier that season.

Bongani Ndulula opened the scoring in the 38th minute after being played in by Andile Jali, but Collins Mbesuma responded just three minutes later to level matters.

While Ajax were trailing 2-1 in Cape Town, Bucs struck with six minutes left on the clock through Isaac Chansa, sending shockwaves throughout the country.

In the end, it was just enough for the Soweto side to clinch the title on goal difference, with a pitch invasion ensuing at Orlando Stadium.
