Mnqgithi's warning for low blocking teams

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has insisted that his side is aware and capable of breaking down teams who defend deep.

Sundowns climbed to the top of the DStv Premiership table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Chippa United. The winner was an added-time volley from Peter Shalulile – extending his personal tally to five goals for the season.

Sundowns struggled to break down a Chippa side hell-bent on walking away from the bout with at least a point. A tactic already deployed to success by both TS Galaxy and SuperSport United against Masandawana.

During his post-match press conference, Mngqithi was asked if his side had noticed the trend from the opposition.

"It's what we always anticipate. That we're going to have more than 80% of matches played with a very low block," he told journalists.

"This is what has been happening throughout the season because sometimes even some of the big teams resort to this strategy against us and we are always preparing our team for that.

"Our wish is always to break the game down very early, which is what we did against Chiefs, were very early we have already put them to the sword, now they must come out.

"It then becomes very difficult for the team that had plotted to sit back when they now have to come to you."

Despite Mngqithi's frustration with the approach, he insisted that Sundowns remain capable of breaking down any side in their path.

"We believe that we have a team capable of breaking teams down," he added.

Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to retain their top spot when they welcome Golden Arrows on Saturday.
