Mathoho to land legendary status on sad note

Mathoho is completing a decade playing for Chiefs at the end of this season which should normally rubber-stamp his standing as a legend considering his contribution as a regular under Stuart Baxter, Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, and Gavin Hunt.

In his time at Chiefs, Mathoho has had 258 appearances with a return of 25 goals including his most recent against Orlando Pirates which came courtesy of a trademark header.

However, with another year remaining on his contract, the 32-year-old has suddenly found himself frozen out following a horrendous blunder that left to the home defeat against Golden Arrows three weeks ago.

Under absolutely no pressure at all, the experienced mistakenly laid the ball onto the path of Knox Mutizwa leaving the Arrows forward to finish with a chip past Bruce Bvuma just five minutes into the match.

Mathoho was then withdrawn at half-time during that match.

Since that blunder, he has been dropped from the matchday squad while his fellow partners at the back from that match Daniel Cardoso and Njabulo Ngcobo have been relegated to the bench.

Against TS Galaxy, Baxter used Ramahlawe Mphahlele, Thabani Dube, and Siyabionga Ngezana with Daniel Cardoso and Njabulo providing defensive support from the bench as Chiefs kept a clean sheet.

The same trio was used again in the 3-1 win over Chippa United over the weekend.

Chiefs have at least six games remaining plus another two still pending due to their ongoing case against the PSL over games that they didn't honour in December due to an outbreak of covid at their base.

Baxter must decide if he is to use Mathoho again this season ahead of joining an exclusive group of players with a decade's service to the club who include Itumeleng Khune, Gerald Sibeko, Thabo Mooki, Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Tinashe Nengomasha, Arthur Zwane and Kaizer Motaung Jnr amongst others.
