Mashamaite won the prize as well as the Fans' Player of the Season gong at his club's annual awards function in Midrand last night.
However, the 30-year-old caused a stir when he called Mathoho's agent Tim Sukazi up on stage to accept the main accolade after he beat 'Tower' to three awards at the PSL's end-of-season gala on Sunday night.
‘Masha’ says once he was named Chiefs' Player of the Season he took an immediate decision to relinquish the award - and the R100 000 prize money - to his central defensive partner.
“I won’t talk about who deserves it more, because there will always be varying opinions,” explains Mashamaite.
“But I decided that I’ve won enough awards at the PSL, and I just wanted to share the [success] with one of my ‘co-starring’, if I can call it that.
“[Mathoho] has been magnificent as well, so I think he has contributed a lot to the success of this team, and also adding to the fact that the chairman [Kaizer Motaung] talked about teamwork being one of the most important ingredients in winning the title this year,” adds the KICK OFF Footballer of the Season.
