Mekoa was among the most consistent players for the Team of Choice last season, although, the club struggled throughout the campaign, only confirming their survival on the final day of the season.
Following those heroics the 'Big Three' of South African football came knocking to test Maritzburg's resolve, but were turned down by the club's chairman Farouk Kadodia, who maintained that no player would leave the club.
However, Mekoa says this season will probably be his last year as he dreams of playing for a bigger club in the near future.
"For now I'm staying at Maritzburg for one more season, just one more season," he stated.
The 22-year-old, who was part of the South African men's team that competed at the Rio Olympics, went on to say that he has now turned his attention to matters closer to home.
Mekoa is adamant that, despite his side's poor showing last season, they are fully capable of challenging for league honours this time around.
"We want to challenge for the league and and I know it's possibly. Last season was the scrappy season, if I could say, we managed to survive at the last minute," he said.
"Having said, what I want to achieve is to win trophies but we're not in the MTN8 so we are looking at other trophies to play for.
"But also I want to challenge for the league and see what we can get out of it."
Ernst Middendorp's side will open the new season away against the German mentor's former club Bloemfontein Celtic next week Wednesday at Dr Molemela stadium.
