Mamelodi Sundowns' Rheece Evans to debutise for Ajax in Cape Town Cup

The Mamelodi Sundowns right-back endured a tough season under Pitso Mosimane last campaign, featuring in just 44 minutes of League action the entire season since joining from Maritzburg United in June.

The 24-year-old is looking to resurrect his playing career in the Cape, and having been on trial under Roger De Sa, is set to make his unofficial debut at this weekend’s pre-season spectacle.

Ajax Cape Town CEO Ari Efstathiou confirmed there is interest from both parties to sign the defender, with the club at an advanced stage of negotiations.

“We are at quite an advanced stage [of talks] with Rheece,” Efstathiou tells snl24.com/kickoff. “We would like Rheece to join the club, and Rheece would love to come to the club – he fits nicely with the system that we are playing.

“Now it’s just a matter of agreement with the clubs – we are busy speaking with Sundowns at the moment.”

When asked if he will participate in the Cape Town Cup, Efstathiou confirmed the defender’s involvement.

“Yes, he will,” he says.

Should he sign, Evans will be brought in to replace Nazeer Allie, who earlier made the move to Bidvest Wits, and will face competition with utility player Cecil Lolo, who also played in the right-back position last season.

Ajax face Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in their semi-final clash at Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening, with kick off scheduled for 20:15.
