'Shoes Moshoeu remains the best player I played with and against'

In this edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff catches up with Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic legend Ernest 'Wire' Mtawali.

The retired midfielder reveals how he wishes he could play for Orlando Pirates again.

Growing up, who was your idol and why?

"Growing up, my idol was Damiano 'Dinky' Malefula, who played for Bata Bullets as well as the Malawi National Team.

"He was a great midfielder who kept everything simple and could dictate the tempo of the game for his team."

A club you grew up supporting and why?

"I grew up supporting Wanderers the team which was led by Jack 'Africa' Chamangwana.

"They had exciting young players like Barnet Gondwe and Jimmy Mphamba. They were nicknamed Nomads."

Your breakthrough into topflight football, how did it come about?

"My breakthrough came through a very good youth development where I played for Young Merchants together with Lovemore Chafunya this was a youth team of Hardware Stars."

Who was your best friend in football?

"Cedric Nakhumwa. We grew up together in Chilomoni and played together from the age of 8 years.

"We also played together professionally at Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns."

What do you dislike about football and why?

"Bad mouthing and backstabbing. Give credit where it's due."

Who is your favourite player in South Africa right now, and why?

"Teboho Mokoena for the current generation of players, but Shoes Moshoeu remains the best player I had an opportunity to play with and against in South Africa. May his soul rest in peace."

If you could join any club in South Africa right now as a player, which club would it be?

"Orlando Pirates. I played for them toward the end of my career. The feeling I got from playing for them was phenomenal. I wish I could have retired playing for them."

If you could live anywhere in the world, where could it be?

"Jozi. It builds your character."
