Matombo, the younger brother of former Manning Rangers and Amaglug-glug international Nkipitheni Matombo, is currently in Tembisa without a club after had his contract with Chippa United was terminated for alleged disciplinary issues.
The youngster had joined Chippa from Kaizer Chiefs on a season-long loan deal alongside another Amakhosi player Zitha Macheke, and blames only himself for his troublesome past.
"In life when things go your way you don't realise that along the way there are people you are hurting," Matombo tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"People who love you, people who want better things for you. I'm saying this because when I was playing for Chiefs I hurt a couple of people without realising it. I never talked to those people – when they called me, I was with new friends.
"I hurt my family, my brothers Nkipitheni Matombo and Calvin Phumi, and Bobby Motaung … they all believed in me. And I only came to realise that when my career was ruined. But I blame nobody but myself."
The 23-year-old highlights one particular person he owes his most sincere apologies to: his agent Nditsheni Lethole, the man who took him to Kaizer Chiefs.
"Most of all, there is one person I've really, really hurt and I would like to apologise to him: Mr Lethole,” Matombo says. “He was like a father to me, he took care of me in my desperate times when I had nowhere to go. He genuinely loved me, and he played a big role in my career … he is the person who took me to Chiefs, but once I was there I forgot about him.
“I did to him what I always do to every person who shows me kindness, I hurt him. I'm so sorry for every pain I've cost him, I wish I could turn back the hands of time and rectify my mistakes. I hope he will forgive me one day.”
Matombo insists his apology is not an attention-seeking act as he looks to get his career back on track.
"I'm not doing this for attention,” he says. “I'm doing this to show everyone that I'm a changed person and I can do better. I have analysed my life and I have realised that apologising to everyone I have hurt will make me feel better and it will help other people to understand that it's okay in life to make wrong choices and then turn around and see what you did was wrong.
“There is always a second chance in life, we can always get a second chance to amend our failure and mistakes."
