In this week’s edition of Weekend Wrap, KickOff looks at Kaizer Chiefs’ new signings shine, a questionable penalty for Orlando Pirates, Manqoba Mngqithi’s call for VAR, and Peter Shalulile’s new PSL record.
Nabi 'cooking' winning recipe at Chiefs
The Soweto giants returned to winning form with a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
Debutant Flavio Silva delivered the winning goal, and what would be more satisfying for head coach Nasreddine Nabi is that substitutes Mfundo Vilakazi, Gaston Sirino, and Silva were all involved in the build-up for the goal.
The win keeps the side in second spot on the log with four victories from five matches. Sekhukhune United, who have the exact same record, are ahead on goal difference.
Mnqgithi’s call for VAR
While Amakhosi and Nabi will be celebrating their win, opposition head coach Manqoba Mnqgithi was left feeling hard done by the officiating on the day and made it a point to call for the Video Assistant Referee system to be brought to South African shores.
"The only sad thing is that sometimes when you look at these decisions of penalties and free-kicks and fouls in the PSL, I don’t think we are winning much without VAR," said Mngqithi during the post-match press conference.
"You can say whatever you want to say because without VAR, we are a little bit exposed. Decisions are taken, and you move on. Nobody talks. It’s Golden Arrows by the way, so nobody talks."
Shalulile’s record-setting moment
Shalulile etched his name in the history books as he scored his 130th PSL goal.
The goal, which handed Sundowns all three points against Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, set a new record of most goals scored by a single player in the PSL era, surpassing the 129 netted by Siyabonga Nomvethe.
Close behind the Namibian is Sekhukhune's Bradley Grobler, who has now found the back of the net 121 times in the PSL (all competitions) after also being on target in the log leaders' 2-0 success over Durban City.
Meanwhile, the win keeps the Tshwane giants in third place, just two points behind Chiefs and Babina Noko.
Pirates’ penalty drama
Meanwhile, the Buccaneers sent a strong signal of intent with a dominant 3-0 victory over Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Patrick Maswanganyi, Tshepang Moremi, and Deon Hotto sealed a third win of the season for the side, who have now climbed to fifth place.
For all the goals, the match will be marked by not only a penalty missed by Patrick Maswanganyi, but the manner in which it was awarded.
Evidence Makgopa was fouled seemingly just outside the box to the naked eye before tumbling inside the 12-yard area, to which the match official pointed to the spot.
The debate over the eligibility of the penalty has dominated the corridors of social media over the weekend, with some crying 'justice served' after 'Tito' missed.
Other results:
Monnapule Saleng’s Orbit College FC slumped to yet another defeat, this time to of TS Galaxy, who triumphed 3-1 at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.
As for Arthur Zwane’s AmaZulu FC, it was yet another draw, as they shared the spols with Magesi FC (1-1) at Seshego Stadium on Saturday, as did Marumo Gallants and Polokwane City.
