DStv Premiership match report Swallows v Cape Town City 09 August 2022

Swallows FC collected their first win of the season in the DStv Premiership with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Cape Town City on Tuesday evening.

Nicholas Lukhubeni debuted for the Dube Birds, as City started Patrick Fisher, Kajally Drammeh and Taariq Fielies after the loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday.

A fast start from the Citizens loomed, as a loose ball outside the danger area found Brice Ambina, who fired wide of target.

The Dube Birds weathered the storm and broke the deadlock on 15 minutes after off-season signing Waseem Isaacs headed home a pin-point cross.

Swallows grabbed a second goal towards the half-hour mark as Tshediso Patjie ran in an open space on the edge of the area and directed a first-time shot into the bottom corner.

The home side's advantage came under threat late in the half this after Darwin Gonzalez ran on a through pass, rounded goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa to find the back of an empty net.

Full-back Pentjie Zulu was withdrawn six minutes before halftime and saw veteran defender Wandisile Letlabika come on as his replacement.

City experienced a bright start to the second half where balls into the area from all angles kept Mbanjwa and the entire defensive compartment extremely busy.

The Citizens maintained persistence midway following the second period and levelled after Khanyisa Mayo needed consecutive attempts to head home a surging cross from point-blank range.

Swallows though could've snatched a goal late on through a sitter from Naeem Amoojee, who dragged his effort over after the Citizens failed to clear their lines.

The Dube Birds ultimately grabbed the winner in the dying minutes as Lindokuhle Mtshali converted from the penalty spot following a foul in the area by Marc Van Heerden.

Swallows could've gone on and added a fourth goal following the closing seconds, but it wasn't to be as they nonetheless picked up their first win of the season.
