David Zulu explains for the first time why his stay in Naturena was not successful.
Though he managed to win a league title during his stay at the Soweto giants, Zulu could not repeat the goalscoring form that saw him become a sought-after striker in 2015.
It was Amakhosi who won the race for the then Chippa United goalscoring machine.
"You can't start a play and finish it, somebody must provide you with passes. You cannot always rely on set pieces.
"I can say the service and time are what derailed my progress at Kaizer Chiefs.
"Remember I arrived at Chiefs during Baxter's first stint, and we talked and he encouraged me, but the moment I got there he told me he wanted to win the League and that he prefers me playing the Bernard Parker role.
"So I must watch closely everything Parker does.
"He didn't want to interfere much with the structure of the team because he wanted to win the league.
"So he showed me a lot of positives to a point where I understood my role that if something was to happen to Parker I had to be ready.
"There's even a game we played against Sundowns and we won 1-0 and the goal was scored by Parker. I came on as a sub, and I remember when he (Baxter) told me the game was in stalemate and it needed that individual brilliance if I can provide it.
"He then told me to play behind Parker and come from the middle to create combination play with Parker, and that's how the goal came about and we won 1 - 0.
"After that, he told me he was happy and he could see progress in my game. And that he is a coach that relies more on players he wants to use, he doesn't keep players that are surplus requirements.
"So his departure didn't sit well with me because what I had built with him was now being destroyed.
"I can say his departure affected me. When coach Steve (Khompela) joined he introduced changes and his own preference," he said.
