On Sunday, the Buccaneers played to a 1-1 draw against the Cypriot side Pafos, with Appollis providing a crucial pass that set up Relebohile Mofokeng's goal.
Earlier in the week, Pirates suffered a defeat against Bolton Wanderers.
Throughout the Soweto giants' friendly matches, Mbuthuma and Appollis have showcased their talents effectively.
"It's great to see the quality of players they've brought in," Shongwe tells KickOff.com.
"I particularly like Oswin Appollis and Yanele Mbuthuma. Given what Appollis was able to achieve at Richards Bay, I believe the support in midfield at Orlando Pirates will greatly improve.
"He won’t need to concern himself with defensive duties or exhausting runs back. Instead, he can focus solely on his role as a striker.
