In our latest edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates player James Mothibi on the origin behind his nickname "Storotoro".
Who and where did you play?
"I started at African Wanderers. Orlando Pirates bought me, and I played there for two seasons.
"I had signed for three years but after two seasons I asked to be loaned to Tembisa Classic who sold their status to Maritzburg United that year."
What's your nickname?
"Storotoro"
Who gave it to you and why?
"Andile Cele. Remember he was my teammate at Orlando Pirates.
"He said it was because of my ability to turn a bad pass I had received from a teammate into a good one. I made my teammates look good. My first touch was very good.
"Do you remember that song by Mzekezeke? Akekh'ugogo. Storotoro. That's where the nickname came from."

Did you like it?
"No. In the beginning, I did not understand its meaning because every time a teammate said Storotoro the likes of Gift Leremi would burst out laughing.
"And you know the story about a nickname, it stuck if you don't like it. I ended up accepting it."
Is anyone that didn't use it?
"Everyone called me Storotoro, even the players I'm currently coaching.
"Even now if I go to the Pirates office or to play for the masters everyone calls me Storotoro. They always remind me of the good old days.
"I never had a problem with the Pirates family, remember I was liked by Nkosana Khoza, not a coach. Nkosana recommended my signing."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"I ended up loving the name Storotoro because it was from a teammate.
"But I had other nicknames like the Blonde Bomber because of my dyed hair.
"Because I was not good in IsiZulu I preferred to speak English with my teammates and fans in KwaZulu-Natal, the supporters decided to call me Englishman.
"That's the name I liked playing for African Wanderers. So, I loved Englishman."
