Story Behind My Nickname: Ayoba-Yo!

In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with Orlando Pirates' legendary goalkeeper Innocent Mayoyo on the origin of his popular name "Ayoba-Yo!"

Who and where did you play?

"Innocent Mayoyo started his football career at Orlando Pirates in the late eighties.

"After retiring I ventured into coaching."

What's your nickname?

"My nickname is Ayoba-Yo!

"It's the only nickname in the country that has a dash and an exclamation mark. In music, it's called alliteration."

Who gave it to you and why?

"It comes from my flexibility. Remember when I played for Pirates, I was 20 years old.

"I was a skinny young man; I was very small in terms of the body. So, I used to jump around a lot which is ukuyobayoba.

"It was given to me by a former football writer Fanyana Shiburi. It was after our game against Bloemfontein Celtic.

"Remember before that match Pirates were known as Celtic's whipping boys.

"After that match that ended 0-0 on a Monday a newspaper article described me as Innocent "Ayoba-Yo!" Mayoyo.

"That's how I got the name."

Did you like it?

"I like it even now. It's a name I'm now using for all my projects and my institutions and empire.

"My academy is known as Ayoba-Yoh! Sports Academy. My business is called Ayoba-Yo! Consulting and Projects.

"What I like about my nickname is it's unique, I didn't inherit it from somebody else.

"Not like today where they are calling a player 'Jomo' just because he has a big head."

Is there anyone that didn't use it?

"Even today people are still calling me by my nickname. That proves hard work does pay."

If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?

"Growing up my nickname was Peter Bala'c, that one was worse because Peter Bala'c was white and I'm black (laughs), so I wouldn't change Ayoba-Yo! for anything."
