Ex-Chiefs coach: Pirates playing for position 2

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Sergio dos Santos is of the opinion that rivals Orlando Pirates know that winning the 2023/24 DStv Premiership will remain but a dream.

Santos says despite Pirates' position on the log table following their recent results, catching up with Sundowns will prove difficult.

On Sunday the Sea Robbers were impressive in their win against Lamontville Golden Arrows.

"Pirates are a team that is struggling to be consistent," Santos tells KickOff.

"Pirates, they've got a good squad of players, but I don't think they are playing to the level they should be playing. That's why you see one week it's one thing and the next week it's something else.

"And certainly the situation with Thembinkosi Lorch is not helping, and the injury to Monnapule Saleng also affected them a little bit. The Pirates squad is very big, and the coach is struggling to put the right combination of players together. That's the main reason they are struggling a little bit.

"The league title race is between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United because SuperSport United is consistent. They are always there or thereabout.

"Nobody is going to come close to Mamelodi Sundowns, their squad is way too strong for this league. Sundowns can change their team every week and still get a result.

"Realistically, with the squad they've got, Pirates should be right up there, challenging for position 2. So there's no consistency there. I think by now Pirates know they are playing for position two, if they don't believe that, then they are dreaming.

"That's how good Sundowns (are). They have a very strong team with a very strong squad."
