Riveiro: We have to switch our minds to playing the 'final'

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro believes they must adapt to the demands that their fixtures scheduling throws at them.

Riveiro shared his sentiments after their league game against Royal AM at Harry Gwala was called off a day before it was due to be played, leaving them six points behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

The PSL has confirmed that all matches involving Royal AM – now under curatorship – have been suspended until further notice due to compliance issues, which have come with the club failing to provide the League with a letter of comfort.

"It is a permanent adaptation to the circumstances that come with our job," says the Spaniard, whose team was favoured to pick up all three points and move closer to Sundowns.

"And this is one more.

"We were prepared to travel to Durban and stay there for the rest of the week and have a good camp in preparing for these two games.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't and again we have to change our schedule again and this is the second time after it happened against Cape Town City because of the weather conditions.

"We had to find ways to stay focused and this time it does change the plans a bit as we wanted to play the game we were supposed to play and fight for the three points.

"Now we have to switch our minds to playing the final (against Richards Bay FC on Sunday) because when you are playing in the Nedbank Cup, you have to play finals from the first day because everybody wants to do well in this type of tournament.

"It is a permanent adaptation to the schedule and circumstances and in terms of planning, we don't complain," says Riveiro, whose team now focus on the Nedbank Cup.

Pirates have won the last two editions of the Nedbank Cup and start the competition with a trip to Richards Bay.

"We are so happy to start our time in the Nedbank Cup again because we have nice memories in this competition in the last two seasons as everyone knows," he adds.

"We have a difficult task ahead to defend the title one more time and at the same time, it is something nice to have the opportunity to defend titles every season.

"We are going to try our best understanding that it is a cup game, and everything will be played in one day, so we need to be at our best," he concludes.
