Pirates captain aiming to pursue academic studies

Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela has revealed his ambitions to further his academic studies next year to plan for the next phase of his life after his playing career.

Maela was one of several DStv Premiership stars who graduated from the Gordon Institute of Business Science last week.

The education program was organised by the PSL as part of an initiative to empower local football players for life after football.

"Yeah, the graduation was amazing. It was nice since as a footballer when you experience you get speechless," Maela tells KickOff.

"For me personally it has helped me broaden how I think.

"I plan to further my studies going to the new year to make sure that I always look after my academies because you may never know what will happen after my playing days, so the program was helpful and exciting," he added.

Vincent Pule and Itumeleng Khune are some of the household names to successfully complete the academic course.

Lehlohonolo Majoro, Xola Mlambo, and Herold Ndlovu are among the professional players that have all attained tertiary qualifications in local football.
