My Muti Story - Gora Ebrahim

In this edition of My Muti Story, we hear from former Orlando Pirates defender Gora Ebrahim.

Who and where?

"Muti is used throughout Africa, so it is something that we did.

"At Pirates, we used to have our sangoma travel with us. From what I hear a sangoma is still travelling with Pirates. He was just part of the team.

"When we played against Kaizer Chiefs in the final of the 1993 Iwisa Charity Spectacular, if you look at the photos of my kit it got black marks on it.

"We played in a wet kit on a very, very cold afternoon. It was freezing but the kit was wet, and it had a very, very strong smell. That was the first time we beat Kaizer Chiefs in the Iwisa.

"But I grew up with muti my man, in the Vaal. So we didn't do anything out of the ordinary at Pirates. L

"We did a lot of things at Pirates, I knew most of the things we did at Pirates."

Why were you doing it?

"No. No explanation was given. But I accepted it as part of our traditional belief."

Who was the muti man?

"I don't know because they changed him when we lost to Hellenic."

What did you have to do?

"I'd rather not say."

Did everyone take part?

"Everyone did. Those days you wouldn't say no. Brandon Silent was there, and Ivo Simunic and Gavin Lane came we had a few non-black players."
