Mashego: I have unfinished business at Pirates

In The Spotlight this week KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego.

'Mahoota' reveals what he mostly dislikes about South African football.

Who was your idol?

"I watched a lot of Kaizer Chiefs and Doctor Khumalo was my idol. My Dad was a Chiefs supporter.

"I did not get a chance to play with Doctor Khumalo, when he retired, that's when I was starting."

Who was the most influential person in your football career?

"I was influenced by a lot of people, and obviously, my parents supported me. My Dad bought my first soccer boots.

"Had my Dad not bought those soccer boots, I could have been lost to football."

How did your break to professional football happen?

"There was a guy from Soshanguve who organised for us to go to Cape Town, together with Tim Sukazi.

"When we got there, Sukazi took us to trials, and that's how I ended up at my first professional club, Hellenic."

Who was your best friend in football?

"At Silver Stars, I struck up a good relationship with Solomon Mathe. And even today we still speak."

What do you dislike about football?

"Clubs not paying what is due to players, that is the most heartbreaking thing about football, even the bigger clubs are always looking to find a way of not paying players what is due to them.

"South African clubs don't respect the contract of a player. If you go to the PSL, there are hundreds of cases of players that are being owed money. Clubs are always looking for ways to terminate a player's contract."

How can you describe your style of play?

"I loved the feeling of scoring goals and contributing to my team. My style was based on scoring goals, as many as I could."

Which TV program was your favourite back then?

"Those days there wasn't much to watch on television, but I did watch soapies like Generations and Isidingo to kill time."

If you could join any club right now as a player, which club would it be?

"Orlando Pirates. I have a little bit of unfinished business at that club. You know whatever happened is water under the bridge, but if I could, I'd re-join them right now."

Which opponent gave you sleepless nights?

"Thabo Nthethe was a smart defender, and Morgan Gould also was very tough to come up against."

If you could live anywhere in the world, where could it be?

"South Africa."
