Chaine: How I stopped Downs' penalties

Sipho Chaine has given a sneak peek into what he went through in the penalty shootout as Orlando Pirates pipped Mamelodi Sundowns at the post for a place in the MTN8 final on Saturday.

With the first leg of the semi-finals having produced a 1-1 draw seven days prior at Orlando, Sundowns and Pirates conjured up the same scoreline in a tense affair  at Lucas Moripe Stadium last weekened, with the dreaded penalty shootout deciding the outcome.

In the end, the Soweto giants prevailed 4-1 in the spot-kicks, with Chaine emerging as a hero after saving efforts from Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende.

"I tried to stay calm as much as possible," reflected the 28-yeard-old post-match, speaking to SuperSport TV.

"Although it's a very high-pressure situation, I tried today. It was not easy and I am glad it went the right way for me.

"We know playing Sundowns, the top, top kickers that they have, it's no easy task saving these penalties, and I'm glad that we came out victorious.

"We tried to do as much homework as we could. He (Mokoena) is one of the best takers, but sometimes you go right and sometimes he goes left, so it's very difficult in the moment.

"Like I said, I'm glad that it went well for me," explained the man born in Bloemfontein.

With that Abdeslam Ouaddou's men booked a spot in the final against Stellenbosch FC, who defeated Sekhukhune United 3-1 on aggregate.

However, before then, there is the small matter of a Betway Premiership encounter against Orbit College FC at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday (19:30).
