'The Sea Robbers' will be up against an unpredictable Bloemfontein Celtic in this season's top-eight final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening (18h00).
Pirates have yet to win a single trophy under Jele's captaincy and, with the arrival of Thulani Hlatshwayo from Bidvest Wits seeing the armband passed on, this could to be the 33-year-old's chance to change his record with the club.
However, Mngomeni, who won two trophies as skipper with the club, feels regardless whether the Middelburg-born star plays on the day, he deserves his moment to bask in the glory for leadership over the last few seasons.
"Even if he will not be on the field on the day, as the official Orlando Pirates captain, the records will always say the cup was won under Happy Jele's captaincy, even though Hlatshwayo was the one captaining the side on the day," Mngomeni tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"Seeing a club winning a cup during your time as a captain makes you feel like, 'Ja, there's something I've achieved', even though the feeling is going to be different without the crowd.
"I want us to win on Saturday and I don't want us to do so with a small margin. I want scores like 4-1.
"But it would make it a bit better if both Jele and Hlatshwayo hoist the cup together. Maybe Hlatshwayo could be the first one to touch the trophy because he would be the one playing, but Jele should have an opportunity before the rest of the team touch the trophy.
"Jele should be afforded an opportunity to take a photo with it so it will be always remembered that he was the Pirates captain, and the media should state it clearly under that picture that, 'Here is the captain of Amabhakabhaka.'"
