MTN8 match report Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United 28 August 2022

Mamelodi Sundowns left it late to see off SuperSport United 2-0 and booked a spot in the MTN8 semi-finals on Sunday evening.

There were two changes for Sundowns from their midweek win over Stellenbosch FC in Lyle Lakay and Thapelo Morena, but United were without Grant Margeman and Thabang Sibanyoni, who can't play against their parent club.

SuperSport made the first threat in the opening seconds when Bradley Grobler volleyed a knockdown outside the area from an acute angle by Iqraam Rayners wide of the mark.

Masandawana responded following the scary moment as Neo Maema dragged a quick reverse pass from Themba Zwane wide of target before George Chigova pulled off a great save from Peter Shalulile.

The visitors continued to stretch the Brazilians as the half went on and nearly had the lead when Rayners' clever dink at the near post forced a save from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

It was a slow start to the second period with opportunities from the respective outfits few and far between and with the balance of play extremely marginal too.

The frustrations largely in attack continued with little openings afforded midway in the second half, as United gave Yandisa Mfolozi a debut after he came on for Thalente Mbatha.

United were closest to the lead towards the last 20 minutes when Rayners fired in from a tight angle around the area, but Williams managed to produce a save.

Masandawana recovered and hit the front in the last ten minutes after substitute Marcelo Allende attacked a first-time cross from Morena and tapped in for his second in as many matches.

Sundowns made it two in the last minute when another substitute Abubeker Nasir arrived in the centre of the area and tucked in another low cross and helped the host to the semi-finals.
