MTN8 final match report SuperSport United v Cape Town City 29 September 2018

SuperSport showed its intentions earlier on. A free-kick from outside the box made direct contact with the head of Bongani Khumalo, but he narrowly missed the target.

Moments after, Fagrie Lakay picked up a ball inside the box after a low cross out wide but the former failed to keep the effort on target.

As it opened up, Evans Rusike threatened with a low shot that forced Ronwen Williams to get down and punch clear on 29 minutes.

The action picked up at the other end too, as Thabo Nodada shot from outside the box only to be denied by the post with Siphelele Mthembu unable to bury the follow-up.

Then, a cross from the left by Edmilson Dove picked out Ronaldo Putsche who rushed in with a looping header that failed to take flight.

Ten minutes to halftime, Ayanda Patosi missed a glorious chance after being nicely set-up by Gift Links, with the former ballooning from inside the box.

At the other end, the pace of Rusike was becoming unbearable after forcing a corner whilst narrowly missing the net in the process.

Matsatsantsa were forced into a change after Lakay limped off injured. Ghampani Lungu took his place just before halftime.

A quick breakaway from City off a corner found Craig Martin at the centre of a cross from Gift Links, but the forward failed to keep his header down.

The Citizens came close again after Edmilson showed class down the left to beat two defenders before forcing the best out of Williams.

Benni McCarthy made his first change as Riyaad Norodien entered for on 68 minutes, as the game went through a lull on all fronts.

In the closing minutes, City unleashed came close again after a stunning volley from Links narrowly missed the top corner.

With both sets of players pulling up for cramp late on, the game went into 30 minutes of extra time as both sides battled for goals.

The best chance fell to City in the second period of extra time after Norodien’s free-kick was deflected onto the top of the net.

With United struggling to keep going and pulling off injured midway in the game, the game was settled on penalties.

City comfortably converted their first three, whilst SuperSport missed theirs through Bradley Grobler with Reneilwe Letsholonyane following suit.

Thus allowing, Nodada to wrap it up to hand the Citizens the title and hand Benni McCarthy’s his first title as head coach.
