My Welcome to the League Moment - Cheslyn Jampies

In our exciting feature My Welcome to the League Moment, KickOff catches up with former Santos FC, Baroka FC and Jomo Cosmos full-back Cheslyn Jampies.

Jamie says he will never forget the day he had to come up against Felix Obada, who at the time was playing for Moroka Swallows.

"I was at Santos at the time, it was my debut, and I had a good game," Jampies tells KickOff.

"We played them on a Saturday in a league game and we won, I did extremely well, I got my first man of the match in a debut.

"Everybody was raving about my good game and how I must keep it up.

"Felix Obada had friends in our team, I think he told our right back at the time Bongi Macala that, don't worry you guys still have to come to Joburg.

"And there I was laughing at the poor Obada because at the time I was overwhelmed by the way I played and how happy everyone was.

"Then Wednesday came, it was a cup game and we played them at 15:00, to cut the long story short, I was substituted in the first 15 minutes of the game.

"After the game, Obada came to me and said, I told you when you come to Joburg it's going to be hard here.

"That's when I realised, Ja now I'm playing with the big boys. It's hard now.

"I think it was purely fatigue, I was completely tired, I must give credit to coach Duncan Crowie you know.

"He noticed I was struggling, the anxiety, and the air it was a bit different for me as a youngster.

"Obada, he gave me a run for my money on that day. Every time we fought for the ball he would tell me, let's go. At the time Obada was extremely fast and strong.

"That incident gave me an understanding of how this game works, and I think that day helped my football career because in every team I played for after Santos I never sat on the bench.

"That was a turning point for my mentality. It taught me that you need to do your homework for every match."
