My First Pay Cheque - Thamsanqa Tibe

In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff catches up with former Black Leopards star Thamsanqa Tibe who reveals details of his first salary.

Who you signed for…

"It was Black Leopards in 2005, that was in the PSL."

How much was it?

"I earned R3000. It was a lot in those days because I was still a youngster, I think I was still 20 years old then.

"I didn't have a child or a girlfriend, so I would do a lot with that money.

"I'd even contribute R1000 at home and be left with a whole R2000 to spend on myself.

"So, it was a lot of money for me."

How I celebrated?

"I bought myself a pair of Carvela shoes. That time it was still R1000. I swiped it.

"That time Carvela was the in thing to most professional players. Even those who were playing for Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs used to wear Carvela those days. The likes of Gift Leremi used to wear Carvela.

"I was so happy when I bought mine, I was always looking to buy one for myself. I didn't drink alcohol at the time.

"I also bought Motorola V3, I remember it cost me R1500, and I paid it in installments.

"Imagine a Carvela and a Motorola cellphone at the same time. That was me. You could tell by looking at me I was a now a PSL player."

Did it last you the full month?

"It did. My father was working, so sometimes there would be no need for me to contribute at home.

"Sometimes I would give them R500 and be left with R2500. At Black Leopards we used to get paid on the 30th of every month. Our salaries were paid on time at Black Leopards.

"As I said, I had no girlfriend at the time. I'd spend all my money on sweet stuff like juice and some snacks."
