Mohafe reveals how Polokwane beat out rivals in promotion race

Newly-crowned Motsepe Foundation Championship champions Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe has revealed how his side overcame their rivals to seal automatic promotion.

Polokwane sealed a 4-0 win over Pretoria Callies as both Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars dropped points on the final day of the season.

Spurs and Casric will now contest the promotion play-offs alongside the 15th-placed DStv Premiership side at the end of the current season.

"As for the things that were happening outside of the pitch, they didn't concern me, as a technical team we had to keep our heads and be focused," Mohafe tells KickOff.

"We shouldn't have lost concentration, at some point we seemed to have given up because of the nature of the league.

"You'd be leading for two weeks then after two weeks you'd go down. Then you'd be third. It was a yo-yo season.

"But in the end, we became victorious and that was a sweet victory for us on Sunday. That was a sweet victory for us.

"I've been telling these boys this league is ours and we will win it with one point.

"Our players are old in terms of age and have experience. Having those players boosted us.

"If you check before we used to have a lot of young players who brought energy. And we complimented that energy with experience.

"Players need to have two to three seasons of experience in the NFD to have any chance of winning the league.

"I think Casric cracked because of the system that was used, they had a lot of young players. That's where they cracked.

"As for Spurs in their last match, they played with a lot of youngsters. And those youngsters played with their hearts and not with their minds."
