"We want to compete and try to move up. I'm not talking about promotion, I'm not putting pressure on my players, but if we finish in positions one, two and three we will be happy.
"At the end of the day we need to do the job on the pitch, you can write all you want on the tactics board. You plan to take this highway, only to find out it's blocked.
"So we have plans A, B, C and D. To be number one, two and three."
Cosmos finished last season's GladAfrica Championship campaign in 9th position and entered their fifth season in the second-tier of South African football since their relegation from the top-flight back in the 2015/16 season.
Sono also revealed some of the obstacles that are scuppering his side's preparations for the new season.
"We are not yet ready because we are still trying to sort out the work permits issues," Sono added.
"We are not ready but are ready to take the field. All our foreigners had issues with work permits."
After two rounds of fixtures, Cosmos are rooted to the bottom of the standings with two defeats in as many games played.
"When you grow older you mellow down a bit (laughs). We will compete, you can rest assured that we will compete. That's all I can say, we are going to compete big time."
