Zulu details off-field drama

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Siyabonga Zulu has revealed the elements that badly affected his career at the certain clubs he played for.

The defender has been out of action for the last four years and was last on the books of Black Leopards who were still in the top flight at the time.

He has been given another lease of life albeit in the second tier after signing for Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit NB La Masia recently.

"A lot has happened in my life, I asked myself in the last four years what went wrong? I realised I had a lot of fake friends and people that don't live for me.

"In the past four years, I haven't seen any of them even now, I haven't seen them," Zulu told Sports Night with Andile.

The 30-year-old highlights how he drank alcohol every other day, missed training and the harassment from his ex-girlfriend affected his game as well as his relationship with then Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane.

"In the past four years, I stopped drinking alcohol. I didn't drink every day, only weekends and sometimes on Thursdays. I used to drink a lot hey. We used to be a lot and I would pay for it most of the time. I began to miss training and refused to obey the rules of the team.

"My ex-girlfriend used to harass me a lot. The coach (Pitso) started to view me differently because every three to four days police would come to training because of her.

"To my former teammates and coaches (Platinum Stars, Sundowns and former teams that I played for) I want to apologise for disappointing you. I think and I hope that you can forgive me," Zulu said.

Zulu broke into the elite ranks from the then Sivutsa Stars before joining the defunct Platinum Stars and moved to Sundowns in the 2017/18 campaign after two terms with Dikwena.

He also had stints at Chippa United and lastly Leopards before featuring for the national team and has a combined 97 appearances in the big time with one goal to boot.
