Downs midfielder’s stay at the club over

Bolivian midfielder Erwin Saavedra will be left to run down his contract at Mamelodi Sundowns if he fails to get an escape route before its expiry.

Saavedra's contract runs up at the end of June and based on the order of events at the club, the 27-year-old must find another club to play his football.

Such has been the trail of misfortunes for Saavedra that he never got to genuinely to prove his worth at Sundowns since signing two years ago.

The next viable option for Saavedra is to move on to another club in Bolivia – where he has undergone his rehabilitation following the injury that has troubled him through his time with the Brazilians.

Saavedra joined Sundowns at the beginning of 2022 from Bolivar La Paz FC in the Bolivian Primera Division where he had played regular in the four years he spent there after joining from Brazilian club Goias.

Since arriving at Sundowns, Saavedra has lost his place in the national team due to lack of game-time and injury issues at his club.

Saavedra has played 10 games in almost two years at Sundowns and has totalled a mere 265 minutes from those appearances.

He last played on April and wasn't registered for the current season.

The issue of the foreign quota at Sundowns which has Abubeker Nasir (Ethiopia), Marcelo Allende (Chile), Junior Mendieta (Argentina), Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Brazil), and Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil, means one player will be sacrificed to make way for Argentine new signing Matias Esquivel.
