Rulani’s marks push him top of the coaching class

Rulani Mokwena's incredible half century mark has shot him top of the crème de la crème of coaching through the PSL history of domestic football.

When running the rule during Tuesday night's goalless draw against Petro de Luanda it was Mokwena's 50th game in charge since he took over as the sole head coach in October 2022.

Tuesday also marked one year in charge for Mokwena.

The 36-year-old became the stand-alone head at Chloorkop following the humiliating 3-0 defeat in the MTN semi-finals in October last year having shared the head coaching duties with Manqoba Mngqithi for two years prior to that.

Mngqithi and Mokwena had taken over from Pitso Mosimane after he ditched the club in favour of a move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

From hammering Maritzburg 5-0 in his first game in charge, Mokwena has gone on to win 35 games from 50 lifting the DStv Premiership along the way, getting stuck in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals, semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, MTN8 final, and first round of Carling Cup.

Fourteen have ended in draws while it has only been Stellenbosch FC that he has lost to in open play in that Nedbank Cup defeat in April.

The MTN8 final and Carling Cup first round matches count as draws as the two games were only decided on penalties.

Not even Ted Dumitru, Jeff Butler, Muhsin Ertugral or Stuart Baxter had such amazing half century marks at Kaizer Chiefs.

Dumitru had two spells in charge of Chiefs and delivered 10 trophies which included two league titles in his second spell while in his first he won the Champion of Champions twice just like the JPS KnockOut Cup and BP Top Eight.

Even with Pirates, the best of those that have taken charge of at least 50 games has never been anywhere near what Mokwena has done at Sundowns.

None of the Pirates coaches – Jose Riveiro, Josef Zinnbauer, Micho Sredojevic, Roger de Sa, and Rudi Krol – that have lasted beyond the 50 games mark have delivered consistency comparable to Mokwena at Sundowns.

Fortunate for Riveiro is that he has delivered three trophies within 54 games but has already lost 12 games and drawn another 10 during that time.

At Sundowns, not even Pitso Mosimane was able to match this mark.

Mosimane's disadvantage was that when he took over in December 2012, Sundowns was in shambles, and he went on to suffer defeat in four games within his first 21 games.

Mokwena will now work his way towards 100 games with the prospect of still playing another 43 games this season.

Sundowns will have games in the African Football League (possibility of 4 with two guaranteed), DStv Premiership (22 guaranteed), CAF Champions League (possibility of 12 with six guaranteed), and Nedbank Cup (possibility of 5 games with one guaranteed).
