Part 4 I Chukwu provides verdict on the best Downs squad ever

Mamelodi Sundowns' dominance in recent years has wiped out the supremacy enjoyed by Kaizer Chiefs for years while keeping Orlando Pirates at a distant third.

Sundowns' cause has been helped by the fact that they have won 16 trophies through the last decade including the last six league titles in a row.

Prior to this, The Brazilians had twice won the league thrice in consecutive from 1998-2000 and again twice in consecutive years from 2005-07 and this has always fuelled debate on which was the best squad.

"I don't think it will ever be fair to compare squads from different eras because the dynamics worked differently and the resources were not the same," reasons Chukwu who won two league titles and the BOB Save Super Bowl during his first stint at Sundowns from 1996-99.

Those who feed on nostalgia still have strong opinions on how good that squad which had Roger Feutmba and Daniel Mudau was.

"I wouldn't say the current Sundowns team is better than ours because we also had some great players even though we didn't win the Champions League.

"The truth is that the current Sundowns has even more power because of the owner of the club.

"I mean since the Motsepe family took over there has been a bigger investment in the club and the results are there for all to see.

"Sundowns can now afford to buy anyone that they want while with us it was a case of having a good coach who was able to turn average players into good players.

"With us, it wasn't easy because Pirates and Chiefs also had good squads through that era.

"We worked harder as a team," argues Chukwu.

The retired Nigerian only ever played for Sundowns in South Africa through the four spells that he had.

Chukwu's total was 63 goals in 124 starts and beyond that he fell in love with the country that he still refers to as his second home up to this day despite having last played on these shores in 2005.

"When I came to South Africa, I was showed love that I still appreciate up to this day," says Chukwu.

"It is for this reason that I still support Bafana Bafana whenever they play against any other country besides Nigeria which surprises a lot of Nigerians here.

"I run a sports bar here in Lagos, so I have a lot of patrons coming in to watch games and they are surprised at how I'm always for South Africa.

"With the ongoing rugby World Cup, I'm supporting The Springboks and most of the people here in Nigeria don't even understand rugby, so they are surprised.

"I came to learn about rugby along with cricket during my time in South Africa because my doctor in Rosebank used to also treat rugby players as well, so I just made friends with those guys because they identified me from football, and I leant to follow their sport with interest.

"You have to understand that I played for Sundowns and we used Loftus which is also a rugby venue so I got to learn a lot there.

"It is unfortunate that despite all the hulky guys that we have here in Nigeria, we don't really have rugby.

"If we played rugby, we would dominate in rugby," says Chukwu.
