Part 2 I Chukwu: ‘We suffered a lot against Chiefs because of referees’

Raphael Chukwu has detailed how Mamelodi Sundowns was always at the receiving end of dubious refereeing decisions during his playing career especially in games against Kaizer Chiefs.

The big Nigerian arrived in South Africa in 1996 as a 21-year-old after rubbing shoulders with the Super Eagles squad that went to the World Cup two years prior.

Chukwu only ever played for Sundowns in South Africa and had four spells with the club – the last of which was in the 2004/05 season.

His combined total was 63 goals in 124 starts but beyond that was the agony of being victims of bad officiating with the highlight being the 1998 Rothmans Cup daylight robbery.

With the scores at 2-2 and in extra time, assistant referee Tiny Chandermoney ruled that Joel Masilela had scored from an offside position in extra when he had been clearly onside.

Chiefs went on to win on penalties, but the controversy of the disallowed goal hogged the headlines.

"What happened in the MTN8 semi-final against Kaizer Chiefs was a case of a referee making a mistake," says Chukwu.

"I know Chiefs fans made noise about that they were robbed because they were not given the penalty.

"But then what Chiefs fans need to remember is how many times they have benefitted from refereeing mistakes.

"Chiefs has benefitted more than Sundowns through the years, so I don't understand why there is so much noise now.

"It was not only in the Rothmans Cup that Sundowns was robbed with Chiefs benefitting.

"That Rothmans Cup incident might have been the one that was highlighted a lot because it was a final, but we had plenty incidents that didn't go our way because of referees.

"I remember being given a red card against Orlando Pirates for asking the referee why he wasn't protecting us.

"I then went on to miss two games which ultimately cost us the title.

"Imagine, I was just given a red card for communicating with the referee."I was never the kind of guy to say anything nasty to a match official, but I was sent off in controversial circumstances.

"It was a red card that I didn't even deserve.

"Chiefs have benefitted a lot from dubious refereeing decisions.

"If we go back in history and analyse how many times Chiefs have benefitted from this thing of dubious calls by referees you will be surprised.

"This refereeing thing has favoured Chiefs for a long time.

"Football matches must never be decided by match officials.

"As Sundowns, we suffered a lot because of referees in the past and that must be known.

"That MTN8N incident which favoured Sundowns must not be used to discredit the success that Sundowns have had through the recent years.

"South Africa is the best league in Africa and deserves top officiating.

"We must never even know the name of the referee in football because that should be the last person that must be named after a game," says Chukwu.
