Chukwu: The Sundowns ‘Crème de la crème selection’

Nigerian striker Raphael Chukwu was a mere 21-year-old upon his arrival at Mamelodi Sundowns in 1996 after rubbing shoulders with the Super Eagles squad that competed in the World Cup two years previously.

Chukwu's time at Sundowns turned into a success as he scored goals and won trophies.

The goals rained through his first spell with 47 to his name before he left for Italian club Bari.

His second and third stints with Sundowns also had goals before the last that came after he had spent time in Turkey.

Just before turning 30 in July 2005, Chukwu was done with South African football but played with so many players he still has last memories of his time with The Brazilians.

"Would you falter me in saying that I played with some of the best players to ever wear the colours of Sundowns?" asks Chukwu.

"It was an era of amazingly talented footballers which is why I remain in touch with most of them and we are involved in Sundowns' communication platforms for former players.

"Kabo Yellow is what I will always remain," says Chukwu.

"So, my crème de la crème selection of those that I played with at Sundowns has John Tlale in goals.

"At right-back I will have Themba Mnguni, then left-back have Eric Ramasike.

"Coming to the central defenders it will have to be Hluphi (Joas Magolego) and Dan Malesela.

"Into midfield, I will have Fire (Joel Masilela) out on the right then have Isaac Shai on the left.

"In central midfield, I will play Page (Sello Mahlangu).

"I rate Page very high because I played with him, most people couldn't understand or see what he was doing on the field, but he could win balls and automatically get the team playing.

"When he played with Roger (Feutmba) I had the most confidence about delivery.

"In front of Page will obviously be Roger while upfront I will have myself with Mambush.

"Do you think there are many teams that would beat this team?

"I don't think so especially with Ted Dumitru on the bench.

Daniel Mudau was a goal poacher and the club's all

"On the bench, I would have my fellow countryman Muisi Ajao, the Bully (Henry McKop), Surprise Moriri, Ronnie Kanalelo as keeper, and Lovers Mohlala.

"Then there is Barnes (Alex Bapela.

"Augustine Makalakalane as well has to be in there because these were senior players that came in with influence and guided us well and I respect them for that," says Chukwu.
