Who was the best Chiefs player eligible for Bafana?

Hugo Broos wasn't popular with some Kaizer Chiefs fans for his decision not to include any players from their club for the AFCON finals, yet a valid question is who would have been merited being selected.

What infuriated AmaKhosi was that Broos choose to go with 10 players from Mamelodi Sundowns who all got minutes as Bafana went on to their best finish in 24 years at the tournament.

Looking through the Chiefs squad the notable top performer has been Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo.

Of those eligible for Bafana selection, was there anyone deserving?

Bruce Bvuma was fortunate to find himself included in the preliminary squad after playing two games but was then justifiably dropped.

Considering that Ronwen Williams was miles ahead as first choice, Broos chose to stick with his usual back-up options in Ricardo Goss and Veli Mothwa who returned without playing.

Given Msimango was also included in the squad of 50 midway through December after earning regular minutes since joining Chiefs in July.

Thin on international experience for Bafana, the lanky defender was dropped with Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, Nkosinathi Sibisi, and Siyanda Xulu, all ahead of him.

The third inclusion from Chiefs in that enlarged squad was Sibongiseni Mthethwa, another signing made by Chiefs early this season.

Mthethwa had made his push for consideration while at Stellenbosch but stood little chance against the pairing of Teboho Mokoena and Sphephelo Sithole in central midfield.

So, all three players who came close found themselves dropped for justified reasons.

From those that have enjoyed a lot of minutes especially since Cavin Johnson took over in October, it has been Yusuf Maart and Reeve Frosler in front.

Maart has featured in every game under Johnson and has gone as far as captaining the team in the last five games.

The 28-year-old has also featured in every game this season.

Reeve Frosler has also enjoyed the minutes but stood no chance against Khuliso Mudau.

That is as far as the best options went for Chiefs.
