When will Chiefs challenge for the league? Coach responds

Assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has provided a timeline of when Kaizer Chiefs could be ready to challenge for the league title.

Amakhosi's new technical team arrived ahead of the new season to a grand welcoming and a weight of expectation. After all, this technical team of experts had long proven their pedigree and won head coach Nasreddine Nabi multiple titles in the past and more of the same was expected at Chiefs.

However, after 14 league matches, the Soweto giants are still only in fifth position on the Betway Premiership with just six wins to show for their efforts. It has become increasingly clear that Chiefs will not be challenging for the title, at least for this season.

So when will Chiefs return to their glory days? Speaking at the Nedbank Cup Last 32 media briefing on Thursday,  Ben Youssef provided some insight.

"To be honest with you, what we've discussed about the project at Kaizer Chiefs is that to beat the other team, then next year or in two or three years it is to fight for the league," Ben Youssef said.

"We have to come back, when I was young, I remember I used to see Kaizer Chiefs in the African Cup [CAF competitions] in the finals or semifinals, it was one of the best teams in Africa."

Realistically, Amakhosi's only remaining chance at silverware this season is the Nedbank Cup, where they take on Free agents in the Last 32. Winning this cup would also grant the Soweto giants a spot in continental football next season.

"So we want to come back to Africa (CAF competitions). If you want to come back to Africa you have two choices, you have to finish in the top three or win this cup. As a big team we know every competition you play, you play to win the competition.

"If you play in the league, you play to win the league. Every cup you have to play to win, we don't know what they (Free agents) prepared for us but we will do our best."

The match against Free Agents will be played at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday. Kick-off is at 18:00.
