So far Manning Rangers, Santos and Orlando Pirates are the only PSL sides that failed to defend the trophy after winning it the previous year.
Rangers, coached by Gordon Igesund, won the inaugural PSL title in 1996/97, only to finish fourth the following season. At the end of 2004/05, they were relegated to the First Division after finishing the season in 15th place.
Pirates won their first ever PSL title in 2000/01 season and failed to defend it the following season.
Santos were crowned League champions in 2001/02 and also failed to defend the title when they finished outside the top eight the following season.
Pirates won the 2002/03 Premiership and failed to defend it again. But the Buccaneers did manage the feat when they won back-to-back titles in 2010/11 and 2011/12.
Other teams that have successfully defended their titles are Mamelodi Sundowns (1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/2000 and 2005/06, 2006/07), Kaizer Chiefs (2003/04, 2004/05) and SuperSport United (2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10).
Sundowns are the only club that have won back-to-back League titles on two different occasions.
