Chiefs midfielder faced with dead end

Siyethemba Sithebe will face the remainder of the season faced with having to find a way of saving what remains of his career at Kaizer Chiefs.

Sithebe has stayed on at Chiefs for the remainder of his contract after none of the rumoured moves came to fruition during the January transfer window.

According to the deal that he signed when joining Chiefs in June 2022 after his dramatic departure from AmaZulu, Sithebe is out of contract at the end of June.

This means six months and at least 15 games to try and convince Chiefs to offer him an extension.

Chiefs have 14 league games remaining plus at least one match in the Nedbank Cup.

With a year-and-a-half gone into his stay at Chiefs, the 31-year-old's numbers don't make for convincing reading.

From the 28 appearances that he made in his first season, Sithebe had neither a goal nor an assist playing in midfield.

The dreadlocked midfielder has sunk to a single appearance this season through also having to deal with a knee injury this season.

In comparison with the midfielders that have been deployed in central midfield ahead of him, Edson Castillo has had goals and assists just like Yusuf Maart.

This leaves Sithebe justifiably down the pecking order considering what he does on the field and his contribution towards penetrating the opposition.

Goals and assists have always been an issue for Sithebe who had none of the two in his last season at AmaZulu despite playing 20 games.

This means in his last 54 appearances playing for both Chiefs and AmaZulu, Sithebe has no goal and no assist.

Not encouraging for a midfielder who has had to play in attacking spaces in midfield.
