Chiefs break silence on Khune suspension

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson has provided an update on the situation of goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Khune was "temporarily separated from the rest of the team" in early December last year, as per the club's statement, following a disciplinary hearing.

The veteran shot-stopper was stripped of his captaincy as part of the consequences after he allegedly arrived at training under the influence of alcohol.

While away from the rest of the team, the 36-year-old was tasked with attending programmes that would help his personal growth and development to help him overcome the "challenges" he was facing.

Khune's relationship with Chiefs has taken strain, after the club announced on social media platform X that he would not be available to participate in the Black Label Cup exhibition tournament in early January this year, "as he was still suspended" but later deleted the post.

The former Amakhosi skipper eventually participated in the Black Label Cup as he inspired the All Stars XI side to beat Carling Knockout champions Stellenbosch and were crowned inaugural winners.

However, despite a long Africa Cup of Nations break and the PSL resuming, it appears Khune is still suspended by the club, as Johnson confirmed, speaking to journalists after their goalless draw against Royal AM over the weekend, that his situation hasn't changed.

"It's still the same situation that you find in the media," Johnson told journalists at Harry Gwala Stadium.

"The club will say something about Khune as soon as that is done," he added.

Khune has a contract that is expiring at the end of June and with him yet to be brought back to the team, his situation looks precarious that he will have his deal renewed as a player.

The North West-born shot-stopper is reportedly on the radar of Sekhukhune United, who are willing to offer him a player contract and a retirement package that would involve a role at the club after he hangs up his gloves, according to Soccer Laduma.
