Khune’s shocking input with his back on the ropes at Chiefs

As Itumeleng Khune settles down to intense reflections about his latest situation, startling revelations have been laid on the table about the Kaizer Chiefs legend.

Khune is currently serving a suspension from club training for breaching club protocol for an incident related to alcohol and will now have to be meet certain criteria to be allowed back.

The club has instigated an internal investigation that will inform with how corrective measures are implemented in addressing the transgressions.

Beyond that, as the 2023 calendar year ends, Khune will not look into the mirror with pride about what he has also contributed on the field since the clock rang January 1, 2020.

The evidence of how Khune's fortunes have wilted in the last four years are evidence by that he hasn't won any Bafana Bafana caps through that period to add to the 91 under his name.

A review of his contribution in the last four years reveals some disappointing numbers.

Khune has only played in 36% of games for Chiefs in that period leaving his match day contribution down to a third which a massive drop from the figures he recorded in the decade counting from when he made his first team debut.

The veteran goalkeeper has made 41 appearances and not played in another 113 games since the first day of 2020.

While the reasons for not being able to play have varied from injury to a drop in form amongst others what is of concern is what he has delivered when thrown into the fray.

From those 41 appearances, Khune has conceded 50 goals and kept a mere eight clean sheets.

Fresh evidence of the lack of clean sheets from the 36-year-old is in that he has failed to keep a clean sheet in his last 10 appearances.

This has been the longest that Khune has gone without keeping a clean sheet in his professional career since making his debut against Jomo Cosmos in 2007.

Chiefs have lost nine out of the last 10 games in which Khune has failed to keep a clean sheet, conceding 15 goals with every opponent that Amakhosi have played, including Cape Town Spurs.
