Clock ticking down for Chiefs striker

Yet to register a single goal or assist since his arrival at Kaizer Chiefs, the clock is ticking down on the future of striker Jasond Gonzalez.

The South American was signed on a season-long loan with the option to make permanent the start of the season with the view to buffer the striking department at Chiefs.

After all, Amakhosi were running thin up front with the departure of Caleb Bimenyimana and Khama Billiat, while Ashley du Preez has proven to be injury-proven.

However, Gonzalez has so far been underwhelming in his audition and it is understood the club will not be keeping him for the 24/25 season.

The towering striker has made 12 appearances for Amakhosi this season but just four have been from the starting line-up.

In fact, Gonzales has not started a match from Chiefs since 30 December 2023 and all the noise coming out of Kaizer Chiefs Village are that the Colombian's exit is imminent KickOff understands.

It also does not help the striker's case that all of Chiefs' strikers this season have managed to score at least once in the campaign. Even youngster Wandile Duba has opened his goal-scoring account with a screamer of the goal against Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Ranga Chivaviro has also scored twice, Christian Saile, three times while Ashley Du Preez has struck five times across all competitions.

All the above have all but assured Gonzales ranks lowest in the Amakhosi's pecking order as far as the attacking line is concerned, prompting head coach Cavin Johnson to seek devine intervention.

"Ja, Gonzalez, please God, bless him so he can score goals. It's all I ask because I think Saile has broken an egg, I think Ranga [Chivaviro] has broken an egg, Gonzalez hasn't broken the egg," Johnson told journalists in December.

"A lot of times, strikers are the same as goalkeepers, they are crazy people, and at training, you score goals, they look good, and when you play against an opponent, which you can only [simulate] up to a certain level, they tend not to find the back of the net.

"And that makes them frustrated, so I hope that he's able to get his head or feet scoring – whatever they have to do, and maybe it will come better."

With 10 games still to play for Chiefs this season, Gonzalez still has a chance to make a good account of himself and possibly overturn what is very likely the beginning of the season with regard to his time with the Soweto giants.

Chiefs travel to the Western Cape to take on Cape Town City on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is at 15:30.
