‘Chiefs are being unfair to Khune’

Itumeleng Khune's situation at Kaizer Chiefs has been categorised as being unfortunate considering that he stuck with the club when Mamelodi Sundowns wanted him in his prime.

Khune is into the last three months of his contract at Chiefs – the only club that he has called home for over 20 years – but is facing uncertainty about his future.

The veteran keeper is yet to either get into the match day squad or play since his return from suspension at the beginning of March.

"I think the issue involving Itu needs to be handled differently compared to other players because he is a proper legend," says Khune's former teammate Thomas Sweswe talking to KickOff.com.

"Let me be honest here.

"Chiefs are being unfair to Khune.

"I don't know why Chiefs chose not to keep it internal in handling the issue that led to his suspension.

"I played football and I know that these issues are always there at every club, and they can be kept internal.

"Chiefs know that Khune has given so much to the club and is coming towards the end of his career so he should be protected instead of tarnishing his reputation like what has happened.

"Chiefs is the only club that Itu has ever played for, and they should be in agreement about the way forward when it gets this stage of his career and contract.

"It should be a case of Itu and Chiefs agreeing about which route to take next instead of all of what is happening now with all this uncertainty.

"Itu once had a better offer from Sundowns at one time, but he chose to stay at Naturena because that is his home.

"I hope that Itu doesn't regret not taking the Sundowns offer those years back.

"I feel Chiefs are treating Itu bad considering what he has given this club.

"Itu is a legend at Chiefs and his case should be treated different to other players who played two or three years.

"This is a special case with a special player.

"Itu carried Chiefs on his shoulders for years and was the kind of goalkeeper that you would trust with your life when he is behind you.

"Chiefs wouldn't have won some trophies if it wasn't for Itu, so it hurts me to think that this is how it is now turning out for Itu at Chiefs.

"It is unfortunate that this is what happens in football at times," cries out Sweswe, who is now retired.
