Johnson gets ‘monkey off the back’ at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson's purple patch of two wins in a row has finally brought him joy that has taken 25 games and almost five years to get off his back.

Johnson led Chiefs to a 1-0 win away at Polokwane City on Saturday to push Amakhosi into sixth place and join the chasing pack that has Cape Town City, Stellenbosch, SuperSport United, and Orlando Pirates.

The significance of that victory was that it was the first time Johnson has won two games in a row in 25 games as a head coach of DStv Premiership club.

Through his head coaching career, Johnson last won two games in a row at the beginning of 2019 while he was at AmaZulu.

Johnson overcame Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in a landmark on January 29, 2019, before he then got past Cape Town City on a 1-0 scoreline in his next game.

Since then, the 65-year-old has not known two wins in a row until now.

This means it has taken Johnson 25 games as to tick two consecutive wins with his last 15 games at AmaZulu failing to deliver consecutive wins.

His disastrous short spell at Black Leopards lasted just five games (four defeats and one draw) after which he went to spend a year at Al Ahly as an assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane.

Also of note is that Johnson has now strengthened his command at the top as the coach with the best winning percentage at Chiefs since their last trophy success in May 2015.

Nine points from a possible 15 means Johnson now has gathered 60% of what has been available to play for since he took over in October putting him top of the list.

Below Johnson is Ernst Middendorp whose record reads 29 wins, 16 defeats, and 15 draws for a 48,3% win rate.

Middendorp lifted Chiefs to within minutes of the league title at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Arthur Zwane had a 43,2% winning rate, Steve Komphela ended with a 41% winning mark, Stuart Baxter had a 40,7 % end to his second stint, and Giovanni Solinas (35%).

The bottom two are Molefi Ntseki (30,8%) and Hunt (27,2%) whose stay came while the club was banned by FIFA from signing players.

Domestic football will then go on a six-week break and only resume on February 13.
