After losing out on a chance to coach Kaizer Chiefs, Benni McCarthy has suggested why he was not considered.
McCarthy was among the coaches linked with Chiefs during the off-season, alongside names such as Pitso Mosimane, with the club, at the time, in the market for a permanent mentor.
Quite appealing, considering that the former Bafana Bafana striker was unattached after his contract at Manchester United was not renewed.

However, Amakhosi settled on their number one target Nasreddine Nabi, after their failed attempt to appoint the Tunisian-Belgian ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The erstwhile FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers star drew parallels with the struggle for coaches of colour to be given opportunities in Europe to the big clubs in South Africa.
"I just feel that with us never getting an opportunity to mix among the best coaches in the world, you're never gonna know if there is a Pep Guardiola in one African coach because we never get the opportunity," McCarthy said in an interview on 947's MSW.
"I don't feel like it's me [who doesn't want to coach big teams], because if it was, I'm gonna give you a silly example. After coach Gavin Hunt left Kaizer Chiefs, there was a possibility that I could have got the job, but I never did.

"Just before coach Nabi, there was an opportunity, there were cries from everybody, but I never got, for whatever reason, never [got a call]. You get to a stage where... Yeah, I'm from South Africa, I love our football, but it's probably not gonna happen for you managing there unless it is your Richards Bay coming, your AmaZulu, your Cape Town City...," the Hanover Park native coach bemoaned.
McCarthy also revealed that he does not see himself coaching small teams anymore in the country, as he is looking for an opportunity at a club that would give him a chance to compete for trophies both domestically and on the continent.
