Kaizer Chiefs will end the season with a caretaker coach in Cavin Johnson who is expected to make way for a new man in the new campaign.
This will be the fifth consecutive off-season that Chiefs make a change in relation to the man in charge of their dressing room since their decision to dump Ernst Middendorp for finishing second in the league.

Johnson will justifiably find peace in return to his substantive role as head if development instead of dealing with the fire that has become the situation of the first team at Chiefs.
Since their last trophy triumph in May 2015, Chiefs have had Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter, Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki, and Johnson all calling the shots with no success in delivering silverware.
Was there merit in all these appointments?
Komphela was handed the job despite having never won silverware at any of the clubs that he had coached be it Manning Rangers, Dynamos, Free State Stars, Maritzburg United, and Platinum Stars.
Concerns were raised about his lack of trophy success, but it was overlooked by that it was a 'local is lekker' decision.
In the end whether Komphela resigned or was sacked, the fact is that he failed to win silverware in three years after adopting a squad that had won four trophies in the three years prior.

Next up was Solinas.
The Italian was a strange appointment that bordered on lack of options for Chiefs in July 2018.
Chiefs will be first to admit that they were clutching at straws with this decision, and it was no surprise that after failing in the MTN8, Telkom KnockOut, and losing four league games in 14, they showed him the exit in December.
Middendorp immediately made his way back for a second spell and after doing damage control in his first season the German took the title race to the last day.
However, after finishing second, he was sacked with the experienced Gavin Hunt coming in for the 2020/21 season while the club was serving a transfer ban.
Hunt was a credible appointment, but Chiefs dropped to a disappointing eighth place finish in the league though they reached the Champions League final.

Anxious to end the trophy drought, Baxter was brought back but he lasted a season finishing fifth in the league while firing blanks in the cup competitions.
By this time, Chiefs were now a mess and in need of a proper shake up.
The club then chose to gamble on Zwane handing him a three-year deal with the hope that his familiarity with Naturena would help him fix the problem.
Instead, it all went south with little progress and the writing was on the wall that Zwane wouldn't be allowed to continue into the second season.
So, during the last off-season, several efforts were made to bring in a new coach.
CVs flooded Naturena as is always the case and engagements were made with selected coaches but when all failed it was decided that Ntseki should move from head to technical and development role and take over.
It was an impulsive decision considering that Ntseki had never been a head coach in the PSL before.

That experiment backfired again with Ntseki within three months with Johnson taking over on a caretaker role that will now run up to the end of the season.
While Johnson is a temporary solution, he has also never won silverware as head coach in the PSL at Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu, and Black Leopards.
