Ernst Middendorp backs Kaizer Chiefs attacker Khama Billiat to improve

Chiefs returned to winning ways by beating Absa Premiership log leaders Bidvest Wits 2-0 at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening.

This came just four days after suffering a 2-1 defeat to The Brazilians, against whom they managed just one shot on target from 10 attempts at the FNB Stadium over the weekend.

Middendorp had earlier promised to sharpen his attack in training ahead of their visit to The Clever Boys, and the results showed as Leonardo Castro and Hendrick Ekstein got on the scoresheet.

He has since reaffirmed his belief in his attackers and is confident that things will improve further as others still await their opportunities.

“As long as we are capable of producing possibilities and options to score – and we had a lot on Saturday [against Sundowns] – the rest will come. We will score,” said Middendorp.

“We have the players like Khama [Billiat], Bernard [Parker] and Ryan Moon is still waiting. Lebogang [Manyama] can also score out of the central midfield position.

“There are players that really can do the job, and you saw that in our second goal from Hendrick Ekstein, so that’s good.”

One point of possible concern for the German may be the drought of Billiat, who has failed to find the back of the net since his hat-trick against Zimamoto in their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg tie at the end of November, whilst his last domestic goal came back in October against Orlando Pirates.

However, Middendorp has downplayed the significance of the Zimbabwean international’s slump and is confident they will soon get him back to his best.

“It’s normal. He’s a player with huge potential but, okay, we have the options and whether he plays until half-time or comes from the bench, we will bring him back to [form]. He has huge value for us,” he added.
